Choices Thrift & Gift Shop donates to support FHT’s Diabetic Program
On October 10, 2017 volunteers from Choices Thrift & Gift Shop presented a $5,000 cheque to the FHT to support our Diabetic Program. The Board, staff, and patients of the Bancroft Family Health Team would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for this very generous donation received from Choices. We are extremely grateful that Choices chose to support our Diabetic Program and appreciative of all the hard work of the dedicated Choices volunteers that made this donation possible.
These funds will allow us to expand our existing Diabetic Program through the following initiatives:
- On-site HbA1c testing using our DCS Vantage Analyzer. This testing allows vulnerable patients who are not able to attend the lab to get the best diabetic care at our organization. For example, we recently had a patient that was newly diagnosed as diabetic that was able to start insulin on the day of diagnosis due to the use of this technology.
- Assisting patients by purchasing the latest home glucose monitoring technology. Continuously monitoring glucose levels at home for patients that are newly diagnosed will allow our team to respond quickly to any medical changes the patient is experiencing.
- Sponsoring a child with type 1 diabetes to attend a summer camp through Diabetes Canada. The focus of these camps is to provide children living with type 1 diabetes with opportunities to enjoy an authentic camp experience while having all of their diabetes needs monitored by a dedicated team of trained medical professionals. When children leave camp, they will have gained a new level of independence in managing their diabetes and feel empowered to continue the healthy practices they learned at camp.
